How the ACT® is Scored

1️⃣

Four Section Scores

You receive a score from 1 to 36 on each of the four multiple-choice sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science.

2️⃣

Calculate the Average

Your composite score is the average of your four section scores. The scores are added together and divided by four.

3️⃣

Rounding to the Nearest Whole Number

If your average is a decimal, it's rounded to the nearest whole number (e.g., a 29.5 becomes a 30) to get your final 1-36 composite score.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good ACT® score? +

A "good" score depends on the colleges you're applying to. Generally, a composite score of 21 is the national average. Scores of 25 or higher are considered competitive for many universities, while scores of 30+ are excellent.

Is the ACT® Writing section included? +

The optional Writing section is scored separately on a scale of 2-12 and is not included in your 1-36 composite score. This **ACT® Score Calculator** focuses on the composite score from the four main sections.

How is each section score (1-36) determined? +

Your raw score (the number of questions you answered correctly) for each section is converted to a scaled score from 1 to 36 using a unique conversion chart for each test date. This process, often called the "curve," adjusts for slight variations in test difficulty.

Do I lose points for wrong answers on the ACT®? +

No, there is no penalty for guessing. Your score is based solely on the number of questions you answer correctly. You should always try to answer every question.
